Sad news from Trader Joe's
I was in Trader Joe's in NYC a few weeks ago and noticed my favorite Onion and Chive Corn Crackers were not on the shelf. I just assumed that they were sold out and forgot about it. Then, my mom called me this weekend with some really sad news. After speaking with a staff member at the Trader Joe's in Plainview, NY, she learned that these crackers were no longer for sale.

GASP

How can this be? This was one of my favorite gluten-free crackers on the market in ANY store. I even blogged about how much I love these little circles of deliciousness. My sister and I could easily polish off a box in one sitting and they were our go-to cracker of choice at all gatherings. At only $1.29 a box, I never bought less than 3 boxes at a time. Immediately I emailed Trader Joe's to find out the truth.

Sadly, the Onion and Chive Corn Crackers are no more.

Here was the response from Trader Joe's:

Thanks for contacting us. We have discontinued the Onion and Chive Corn Crackers in our stores due to slow sales. Because our stores have such limited space, if an item does not meet a minimum sales volume, we will discontinue it in order to bring in something we think will sell better. I will pass your comments on to our buyers for consideration. From time to time, if there is enough outcry to bring back a discontinued item and we are able to do so, we will give it another run.
Regards,
NikkiCustomer Relations

I am disappointed that these crackers will not be a part of our Christmas day snacks. Nor will this be my go-to cracker for parties for both the gluten-eating and gluten-free.

Trader Joe's if you are reading this, please reconsider and bring back the cracker!

Gluten-Free Holiday Eats
Here are some great holiday tips from Sarah of Sarah in the Kitchen. Be sure to visit her blog for even more holiday and gluten-free entertaining tips.

Gluten sensitivities can put a damper on holiday get-togethers for folks new to the gluten-free diet and even for us veterans! With a little bit of planning, your gluten-free holiday season can go off without a hitch.

Here’s seven lucky tips for you to follow:

1. Let your host know that you can’t have gluten and offer to bring a dish. This guarantees that you can safely eat at least one dish at the party.

2. Before you head out the door, eat something. If you don’t go hungry you’ll be less likely to drool over those off-limit sweets.

3. Pack an emergency stash. Worst-case scenario, you won’t be able to eat anything at the party BUT you’ll have gluten-free crackers or something to nibble while mingling.

4. Your host’s intentions might be good but, when in doubt, don’t eat it. Unless you are 100% sure the dish is gluten-free, it’s totally okay to ask to see packaging or check an ingredient list.

5. Be aware of cross-contamination. The dish might be gluten-free but someone might have glutened it. Ask your host to label the dish and remind party-goers that pretzels or crackers are not welcomed.

6. Host your own party and make it gluten-free. Give a list of safe foods and get some peace of mind knowing that all party foods are safe.

7. Focus on family and friends. Try not to dwell on what you can’t eat but instead the fun!

Gluten-Free Holiday Tips and Delight GF Giveaway Winner
Last week I hosted a giveaway for a free digital copy of the Delight Gluten-Free Magazine holiday issue. I am excited to announce that Shannon from Gluten-Free Living in DC is the winner. Congratulations Shannon and thanks for your holiday tip!

Here are some of the great tips I got from the contest entries:

"Know what you are eating! If you are attending an office potluck, ask the cooks how they made their meal - or stick with what you KNOW you can eat - salads, popcorn, etc. If you are attending a holiday party - ask the host/hostess in advance what they are planning on making, and see if you could bring something that you know you can eat! For me, this has been a helpful tip!"
~Shannon from Gluten-Free Living in DC

"I was diagnosed in March 2011, so for me, this is my first family get-together Christmas. My oldest son and I have Celiac. We'll take our own gluten-free rolls, hubby is making the fresh ham and I'll make the gravy. My youngest son, a gluten-eater, is attending school for Bakery & Pastry Arts. He has a gluten-free apple pie recipe - that will be dessert!"
~Helen

For all those out there with a big gluten eating family here's my tip for you: share the love! Being the only diagnosed celiac in my family, I like to use the big family functions to share all of my homemade gf goodies and explain the importance and seriousness of food allergies. If it's possible, I like to cook and bake with them and show them how easy it is to prepare food gluten free. Knowledge is power people and what better place to start then with our families!
~Emily from @blueyemily

My tip for the holidays... eat before and bring your own snacks to any holiday events. That way you can enjoy the company without worrying! When we eat with family we know we are safe and I always bake the desserts. Like the other person commented about the crushed cookies pie crust.. it works great! I made a pumpkin cheesecake pie with gingersnap crust and it was better than any gluten pie!! I also use the cookie crust to make ice cream pies... YUM!
~Kim

My tip is simple , yet essential for me! One I found a yummy gluten free bakery, my life was SOuch easier and now I can enjoy my fave toast and jam with berries! (My all time fave real fast when we travel back home to Canada for the Holidays!!)
~Kennell

Make great pie crusts with crushed gluten free cookies.
I made a great pumpkin pie crust using crushed Glow Gluten Free Ginger Snaps. It was MUCH better than the traditional pie crust; spicy and perfect to go with pumpkin. Just pulse the cookies in a food processor (or crush by hand), then mix with 4 tablespoons of melted butter (or butter substitute), and press into pie plate. Bake crust alone, about 7 minutes at 350, before filling with pumpkin. My next attempt will be using the gingersnaps for an apple custard pie crust.
~Gotham Tomato

I went gluten free just before Christmas last year so it was all very new and emotional. This year I feel a little better-prepared but am not sure I have a tip to share. We are hosting Christmas dinner and I am thinking of doing a Mexican-themed dinner since I can make enchiladas and side dishes which are naturally gluten-free.

Send a Gluten-Free Kid to Camp!
I am really excited about this fundraiser to send kids to gluten-free camp for one week. Next July, the Celiac Disease Foundation is hosting their very first week-long gluten-free summer camp. In the holiday spirit of giving, Gluten-Free Saver has partnered with Van’s Natural Foods to help raise money for scholarships for children to attend the gluten-free summer camp next July!

This week only when you donate just $2 (or more if you choose), Van’s Foods will match all donations until they reach $1,000. Help support the cause and reach the goal of $2,000 total at www.glutenfreesaver.com.

Sure, receiving gifts this time of year is always fun, but the feeling of knowing that your generous donation of just $2 can bring a tremendous amount of joy to a young child… well, now that’s priceless. 100% of all donations will go directly to CDF. If you’re feeling extra generous this holiday season, you aren’t limited to donating just $2 – you can give as much money as your heart desires!

As a camp enthusiast, I think this fundraiser is fantastic. Please consider donating this holiday season to send a kid to gluten-free camp!

Gluten-Free Camp 2012 with the Celiac Disease Foundation
If you read my blog, you will know I love camp. If you spend time with my sister and I, inevitably we will probably tell you a camp story or sing you a camp song. We are those girls that say "And one time, at 4-H Camp..." without the gross band-camp stores. ;-)

I went to day camp for many years and then went to DPF Nassau County 4-H Sleepaway Camp for 7 years.  All of my camp years were as a kid living with Celiac on a gluten-free diet. Camp memories are wonderful memories that I will never forget. I still keep in touch with some camp friends thanks to Facebook and I plan on sending my own children to camp one day. It truly was a great experience.

Unfortunately for parents of Celiac children they are often too nervous to send their child away to camp for fear of being glutened when away from home. I completely understand this feeling. I had my own milk crate of gluten-free food in the walk-in fridge at camp and developed a great relationship with my camp cook, giving her a big tip at the end of every summer. Even with my own food crate, there was still always a risk of getting sick when being fed mass-produced food. My camp cook never heard of being gluten-free but she was willing to hold my food and help me out with special meals when needed. I will never forget the first time she handed me a plate of gluten-free French toast made with my bread on a Sunday morning. It meant the world to me! I ate a lot of salads during the summer, but I also safely enjoyed countless meals while drinking bug juice. (if you went to camp, you know what I mean!)

Luckily, things have changed in the past 15 years and now more and more camps are offering gluten-free weeks. I think this is a wonderful idea and I encourage parents to sign their kids up for these camps. It will help put your mind at ease knowing that the facility, the counselors, and the organizers understand Celiac Disease and the necessity of serving gluten-free food to your children.

I am excited to announce that the Celiac Disease Foundation is having their very first Children's Celiac Camp in July30 - August 3, 2012 for kids ages 7 to 15. This week-long session promises fun activities, amazing outdoor activities in the San Bernardino Mountains, and most importantly gluten-free food all week long. If you live in California or nearby, I really do encourage you to sign your kids up for this gluten-free camp week. Trust me, it will be a memorable experience for your child!

Clinical Trials from Home
There is an interesting new opportunity from WEGO Health for at-home clinical trials. Now, some of you might not be interested in clinical trials or might be skeptical so I am only passing along this information to those that are interested in learning more. Also, you need to register and pre-qualify for these trials so there is no guarantee you can participate. Please read on for more information from WEGO Health.

We all know clinical trials are an important part of the online health community but people struggle with distance and time limitations. Through WEGO Health, I recently learned about a new type of clinical trial that can be completed by patients from the comfort of their own home. I wanted to make sure to share it with my readers and fellow community members.
First some background: For those of you who aren’t familiar with WEGO Health, they’re a different kind of social media company focused on helping Health Activists – folks like me who use the internet and social media to connect with others around health topics. WEGO Health’s mission is to empower Health Activists to help others, and they offer Health Activists the chance to get involved with video through WEGOHealth.tv, to learn and connect through webinars and chats, and to gain a voice in the healthcare industry through insight panels and the Health Activist Speakers Bureau
Now, WEGO Health is working with Mytrus – an innovative clinical trials company that is working to make clinical trials more accessible, convenient, and available to a much larger audience with more representative results. WEGO Health is working to bring these new trials to Health Activists (What is a Health Activist? You can find out here!) and to give us a way to share them with our larger online community. I’m participating in a new Referral Program that rewards Health Activists for participants in the clinical trial.
The benefits of at-home trials:
  • Participants can join from anywhere in the country allowing trials to be run with a larger and more diverse group of patients
  • Participants can join from their home so are not limited by health issues or transportation issues that keep them house-bound
  • Trials can be run more quickly and efficiently because of a reduced recruitment period
  • Patients are given more of a chance to affect the course of their own treatment
If you’re interested in participating in clinical trials run at home and online and in impacting the course of new medications and treatments, take a brief survey to see if you qualify for any of the active trials. If not, you’ll be notified as new opportunities come up. To see if you qualify, visit this page: At Home Clinical Trials.

I’m excited by the new option of participating in clinical trials from home (and online!) and I’m excited to share it with you. I hope you’ll take a minute to see if you qualify and share this opportunity with others. To share the program, you can use this link.

Is a Celiac cure in our future?
A number of articles popped up in my Google reader today about a vaccine for Celiac Disease. It looks like a major biotech company has secured $20 million to research Celiac Disease, create a development plan, and start clinical trials as soon as next year.

ImmusanT is "an early stage biotechnology company focused on developing a treatment, and a set of diagnostic and monitoring tools to manage patients with celiac disease." Their approach to treating Celiac Disease is based on immunotheraphy which will make gluten ingestion tolerant in a Celiac patient.

This all sounds really interesting to me, but I am still unsure how I feel about taking medication to eat food that I have avoided for 30 years. I definitely do not plan on participating in the clinical trial, but I am very interested to see how this research pans out over the next few years.

ImmusanT Raises $20 Million in Series A Financing to Advance Immunotherapeutic and Diagnostic for Celiac Disease
ImmusanT, Inc. announced today it has raised $20 million in Series A financing from Vatera Healthcare Partners LLC to advance development of the biotechnology company's immunotherapeutic vaccine Nexvax2®, companion diagnostic and monitoring tool for celiac disease. The proceeds will fund the Nexvax2 therapeutic and diagnostic development plan to the point of demonstrating proof-of-concept. ImmusanT expects to initiate the next clinical trial in early 2012.

The Intolerant Gourmet Book Launch Party

Last week, I was honored to attend the book launch party for Barbara Kafka's newest cookbook, The Intolerant Gourmet: Glorious Food without Gluten & Lactose at the lovely Swann Auction Galleries. To be honest, I knew very little about Mrs. Kafka prior to the invitation but as I began my research about her book and her life I knew I was going to a very prestigious event.

Barbara Kafka is a recipient of the James Beard Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award. Within the food world, this is one of the highest honors. She has written six books, with The Intolerant Gourmet being her most recent. Barbara has also been a regular contributor to the New York Times and has written articles for food publications around the globe. With her cookbook history and her food world pedigree, it was a honor to be a part of this party.

5 years ago, Mrs. Kafka's food intolerances of her youth came back with a vengeance. She suddenly found herself both gluten and dairy intolerant. The world sometimes plays evil tricks on human beings and this is one of those times. A world-renowned food expert and cookbook writer could no longer eat her own recipes. Yet, Mrs. Kafka embraced this new chapter in her life and published a book of 300 recipes, "not a single one of which is a compromise."

Barbara Kafka and Erin Smith

Smoked Salmon and Mango Bites
I met wonderful people at this book launch party, including Barbara Kafka herself. She and I spoke openly about food intolerances and she encouraged me to try the pass hors d'oeuvres, all of which were gluten-free. As one of the only people with celiac in the room, it was really very special to be there. The crowd were the top notch members of the food community and Mrs. Kafka's close friends and family and I was there. Definitely a "pinch me" moment!

I think this new book would make a wonderful present for both those who are gluten-free/lactose-free and those who are not. It is a beautiful book with wonderful recipes that do not compromise flavor just because gluten and dairy are not in the recipes themselves. The Intolerant Gourmet: Glorious Food without Gluten & Lactose is available now and you can buy directly through Amazon just in time for the holidays!

Here is a recipe from Mrs. Kafka's book, which was also served at the party!

Very Spicy Popcorn, from The Intolerant Gourmet
Very Spicy Popcorn

Makes 1 ½ Quarts

Come drink time, there is often a need for a spicy snack. This is it, and crunchy too—not
for the fainthearted.

3 tablespoons safflower oil
¼ cup popcorn kernels
1 ½ tablespoons Barbara’s Five-Spice Powder
Kosher Salt
Freshly ground black pepper

Add half of the oil and all of the kernels to a 4-quart pot with a lid over medium
heat. Leave the lid slightly ajar to allow some steam to escape. Cook, shaking the pot occasionally, until the popping sounds start to die down, 6 to 8 minutes. Transfer the popcorn to a bowl. Stir the remaining oil and the space powder into the pot over medium heat until it becomes fragrant, 1 to 2 minutes. Pour the popcorn back into the pot, toss until well and evenly coated. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Barbara’s Five-Spice Powder
Makes 1 Tablespoon

This is my own special seasoning blend that can be used in or on many things. It keeps well in a tightly closed container in the refrigerator, so it is worth multiplying. It is used in Spicy Kisses and Simplest Lunch.

½ teaspoon ground star anise (1 or 2 whole star anise; see Note)
1 teaspoon ground tumeric
1/3 teaspoon kosher salt
½ teaspoon ground cumin
¼ teaspoon ground allspice
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Place the star anise in a mini food processor (or coffee grinder) and pulse until pulverized. Pour the powder into a mesh strainer over a small metal bowl to get rid of any remaining chunks. Add the other ingredients and mix well.

Note: Eight to 10 whole star anise (1/4 ounce) will make 1 generous tablespoon of ground star anise.

Announcing: The Health Activist Awards 2011

I first learned about WEGO Health via Twitter. This network of health advocates is a great resource for anyone that is living with a health issue and looking for tips and a great community of people living with the same illnesses. The topics covered on WEGO Health run the gamut from sleep problems, to asthma, and of course, Celiac Disease. I have discovered some great health leaders through the weekly #HAchats on Twitter as well as through the forums.

WEGO Health just announced their first annual 2011 Health Activist Awards. There are 12 awards in a variety of categories from the Rookie of the Year, to the TMI, to the Offline Crusader. Now is your chance to nominate your favorite blogger, tweeter, or health leader in the community. I encourage you to participate in these nominations as a way to thank those of us who provide resources to the Celiac world and beyond. Of course I would love to be nominated, but I really encourage you to nominate anyone you feel is worth of one of these awards. Thank you in advance for your participation.

Here is some additional information from the WEGO Health website

What better way to commemorate awesome milestones than by bringing everyone in the Health Activist community together to share what they love. We’ve created an interactive Awards Program to get you and your communities excited to share what has moved you, inspired you, and made a real difference in how you think about healthcare and living well.
What: The Health Activist Awards: 2011 – A WEGO Health Program created to reward Health Activists for their accomplishments over the course of a calendar year as well as to bring awareness, attention, and a voice to their pursuits.
Why: To recognize well-known Health Activists for their continued efforts but also to recognize and showcase the newcomers who have inspired us all with their passion and dedication and will make a huge difference in the online community.
When: Nominations will begin December 1, 2011. Winners will be announced in January 2012.
How: We want everyone to be involved so we will be taking nominations for each of the 10 Health Activist Award categories. After we review all nominations, a panel of Health Activist judges and WEGO Health Team members will come together to select the winner. Winners will be announced in January through a fanfare of posts, spotlights, and features. Each winner will receive an exclusive Health Activist Award Prize pack. Want to be a member of the Health Activist Judging Panel and help decide who will win the awards? Apply to be a judge here.
Did you say Prize Pack? Yes. In addition to the bragging rights and site badge – each Health Activist Award Winner will receive a collection of rewards geared to their Health Activism. These prize packs will include resources, opportunities, and ways to catapult each winner into 2012 with the tools to plan an incredible year of advocacy.

Have another question? Check out our FAQ page for more. Don’t see your question answered? Send us an email at editorial@wegohealth.com
So get ready to show your Health Activist Pride – this is going to be fun.
